California Fugitive Arrested After 36 Years: FBI
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The murderess escaped from a prison camp in California for more than three decades ago, has recovered thanks to a tip taken from her dying mother, authorities said Monday.
Asher, William Walter, III, 66, was arrested without incident at home was in northern California town of Salida on Friday, an FBI spokesman Steve Dupre said.
Asher, who was sentenced in 1967 to seven years to life imprisonment after a fatal bar robbery, was fleeing from an accomplice helped him escape from a prison camp in northern California in 1975.
The trail was cold until 2005, when authorities learned that on his deathbed, the mother asked the Asher family members to help contact his son through a secret number, Dupre said.
Agents using the phone memory is controlled by two calls in a residence in Salida, where Asher lived in the false name of Garry Webb, Donald, Dupre said.
Fugitive emissions, which are divided into a companion in the house for over 20 years, was arrested after the granting of his true identity, Dupre said.
"According to the officer who was there (Asher) was very dark and not really saying too much, but one thing that sticks with the agent was that he was very curious to know how we tracked" Dupre said.
"He asked:" How did you find me? "Said Dupre.
The woman was not identified, and authorities apparently knew that Asher had fled, and convicted murderess, Dupre said.
Asher was originally arrested in Chicago in 1966, where authorities say they fled at the age of 20 years, participation in the robbery Bar San Francisco, where the bartender was shot and beaten to death.
After escaping Growlersburg field of conservation in El Dorado County, Calif., has named David McFee, Donald, worked in long-distance truck driver, married and raised a family, the FBI said.
Asher finally divorced his wife, who was later questioned by the authorities, but could not provide information on his fate. The FBI said a daughter of Asher contacted the FBI several years ago trying to find his father.
