Juan Nicasio Is Surgery To The Neck After Being Hit By A Comebacker
This season has been a constant reminder of not only how dangerous the game of baseball can be, and how dangerous it can be all over the ballpark experience. We did not really need another example, but, unfortunately, got one Friday night when Juan Nicasio (notes), 25, rookie right-hander for the Colorado Rockies, was stretcher off the court for a neck injury after hitting comebacker by the guideline.
Saturday, Nicasio undergone surgery to the neck is "to stabilize the fracture" of his C-1 vertebrae. Finally, the official word, Nicasio rested comfortably in a hospital in Denver.
The injury occurred terror in the seconds field of the second inning when the Washington Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond (notes) reached out and felt strongly the right to protection of the environment. No time to react, Nicasio lining color took on the right side of his head. He immediately fell to the ground after taking the shot, which itself was vicious and cringe worthy, but it seems that the neck injury in fact held in the fall.
Replays seem to confirm this hypothesis. Nicasio When he fell, fell head first, interference with the head and neck protection when riding in the back.

For about five minutes Nicasio always defined globally with one hand and limited arm movement. It was then carefully placed in a neck brace. As he had finally passing the basket a livelier arm movement and the first signs of movement of the legs.
A well-shaken Troy Tulowitzki (notes) was nearly all that was taking place. He spoke of Nicasio injury after the game.
Nicasio was one of the few bright spots for Colorado this season since his debut May 28 Incredibly, it was very effective at Coors Field, adding a 4-0 mark with a 1.58 ERA. Pretty impressive for a beginner, but especially one who had never been above Double-A level as Nicasio.

Nicasio, of course, the injury is certain to provoke another debate about the safety of a baseball pitcher. Frankly, I do not know what could be done to ensure that security. Helmet? Maybe. But it's still going to be exposed to areas of the face, neck, and there's no way you can prevent a child taking a nasty fall of the century Nicasio. Despite the helmet, you're going to be bothered, you lose your balance, and be at risk.
There will always be something. The risks remain. It's just one of those things that you know the risks when you register. I just hope that you are not the only opportunity to catch up.
