Eagles Sign Former Giants WR Steve Smith's Free Agent
It has not been very good offseason for the New York Giants. Not only have they had to watch the Philadelphia Eagles a number of free agents and trades as fast as ever, but they lost tight end Kevin Boss (notes) and the Oakland Raiders, first round of the rear corner to the Prince Amukamara (Notes) is out of time indefinitely with a foot injury, and defensive end Osi Umenyiora (Notes) is very unhappy with his current contract and would like to go elsewhere.
Now, that may still be bad news. The former Giants receiver Steve Smith, a free agent this year, has become the last player to sign with the Eagles - a one-year contract was the first time in Comcast Sportsnet Philly Reuben Frank Wednesday afternoon.
The news is a blow to the Giants' offense, but it is unknown exactly when Smith will play for the Eagles. He had surgery microfracture in December 2010, and after a meeting with Agent Smith, said head coach Tom Coughlin of the Giants, it might be mid-season before the receiver is ready to go.
"I do not agree with this, personally, just because I feel good," Smith said after the transaction was effected. "I ran, I did different things, cut and stuff, and it was a good feeling. I have not had any setbacks, so hopefully that will continue, but we'll see."
So what was Coughlin?
"Perhaps Coughlin has a plan up his sleeve or something, when he said that," Smith said of his former coach evaluation. "Who knows, but I checked and the team doctors and the reports are positive, so we'll see what happens when I arrive to the airport."
The Eagles certainly more doctors seem optimistic, with their bodies and receiver, the team of Andy Reid can afford to wait for Smith, if he is not ready to go until the 2011 season is half completed. Michael Vick (notes) have DeSean Jackson (Notes), Jeremy Maclin (notes), and Jason Avant (notes) that his receivers, Brent Celek (notes) is one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the league, and LeSean McCoy (note) is an underrated option off backfield.
Smith had a short season in 2010, but made the Pro Bowl in 2009 when he caught 107 passes in 157 goals for 1220 yards and seven touchdowns. Football Outsiders finished eighth in cumulative adjusted defensive efficiency ratings and appeared to be one of the best receivers in the league prior to the disappointments of 2010 injury.

This is an intelligent drama Eagles - are mostly short-purchase of a potentially explosive talent on time payments a huge head and cap low price, and may have been attached to the division rival with a fork along the path.
As for the Giants, who have to ask, "What next?"
