Jaguars QB David Garrard Cut A Few Days Before The Opening Of The Season
The news would not have come as much surprise, it happened earlier in the preseason, but as it stands, the Jacksonville Jaguars' Move to inform long-time starting quarterback David Garrard (notes) in a statement comes as a shock, if only because of timing. According to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, cut the Jags Garrard on Tuesday, days before the season opener against division rival Tennessee. The report has since been confirmed by other sources.
"As always, we strive to play the best players," head coach Jack Del Rio told a press conference Tuesday afternoon. "And as I said before, I think it's imperative that we have the courage to do what is best for the football team. All I can say that this decision was a pure calcium [general manager] Gene [Smith] and I met a long time in the last several weeks in the position. No one is under pressure to make this anything other than a decision of pure calcium.
"David had a good track here - we were together at the hip from the time when we in 2007 made him a starter, but he was not able to get what he is pre-season, and even admitted that when we talked about today .. it is for any reason, just could not find a rhythm and be his old self. In this case, we just had to make a decision ".

The short-term plan is to start Luke McCown (notes) with up Garrard first-round pick Blaine Gabbert (notes) that the long-term solution. The Jags traded up to get Gabbert, it was obvious that Garrard days were numbered, but everyone involved in the cache inevitably very well. Get awaited conclusion of the late game.
Strange that the business is part of the Jacksonville Week 1 starter, is the man who took the repetitions of the preseason at least three quarterbacks. Gabbert has led the team with 70 times, Garrard was 38 and had only 18 McCown McCown, however, two failed attempts touchdowns, while throwing touchdown Garrard has not been able to spend three starts after missing the preseason opener. Gabbert, Missouri, rookie, threw a score and a choice.
Garrard, who led the Jaguars to a 11-5 record and an improbable playoff run in 2007 in his first year as full-time starter, was selected in the project selected in the fourth round in 2002 from East Carolina. Your chance to start came at the expense of Byron Leftwich (notes), which was published just before the 2007 season the same way. The Jaguars cut Leftwich on September 1, 2007, after he publicly supports him as a starter. This season, Del Rio had approved Garrard as the main man.
"We need more effective offensively and certainly trigger man plays a big role in it," Del Rio told the CBS Sports on August 23. "I think all the links together. You know how I feel this is a team game we play, and timing of routes with the receivers and protection at the front and the quarterback right decisions to deliver the ball. That's all and you are able to do things offensively that you have a break out here and there and play a beat down, and when you have this synchronization, it is beautiful. So we do things better and we "was in the camp long enough.
"We have the same system, we have the same quarterback, we have the same players. Can we expect to play at a higher level. I expect to play at a higher level and now is a good time."
According to Football Outsiders metrics, the effectiveness of Garrard dropped every season since 2007, but was still better than good start fourth. In 2010, Garrard has thrown 23 touchdowns against 15 interceptions.
Garrard was $ 8.075 million base salary this year. He should not have trouble finding at least one high-profile backup in the league where teams try to settle so many quarterbacks paragraph.
