Cam Newton Breaks Peyton Manning's Rookie First Game, Passing Yardage Record

Cam Newton Breaks Peyton Manning's Rookie First Game, Passing Yardage Record
On September 6, 1998, hosted the Indianapolis Colts Miami Dolphins for what was then the RCA Dome to see their new quarter, primarily pick Peyton Manning (notes). At the end of the game, Manning threw 21 completions in 37 attempts for 302 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
It was not the most promising debut, but Manning threw for over 300 yards in his first game pro, rookie quarterback what each other had done before. Colts lost the game - they won only three of the season - but it was certainly a sign of things to come. And as we all know, Manning played in every game now, after Sunday School marked the end of his 208-consecutive games started in the tube.
It 'was the first game, dropping a record that exceeded the yardage Manning, but it is very heavy stars. 1950 Otto Graham Cleveland Browns for 346 yards thrown in his NFL debut against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 16 of that year, but spent the previous four seasons in the All-America Football Conference, which merged with three teams (Cleveland Browns, the San Francisco 49ers and the previous version of the Baltimore Colts) in the NFL before the season 1950.
Surprisingly, Sunday also marks the end of any record of yards cares to acknowledge. Another option first, Cam Newton's Carolina Panthers broke the mark passes for 422 yards. Not just Manning Newton delete record for the first match of any race rookies, he has done in the way (against the Arizona Cardinals) and a truncated pre-season due to blockage. Unfortunately for Newton, below the Panthers, 28-21, but that's not going to remember about this game.
Total Yards Newton is tied for most passing yards every rookie has thrown in all the results of the first year, a brand owned by Detroit Matthew Stafford (Notes) at week 10 of the 2009 season. Stafford threw for 422 yards against the Cleveland Browns to a 38-37 victory. Of course, Stafford has an advantage over others in this debate - that makes his own against the Browns with a shoulder injury late in the game.
Although it does not detract from what Newton did for the Cardinals. He went 24-for-37, threw two touchdown passes and one interception, and hit eight different receivers. Probably the most impressive passing play on the day the Panthers had a touchdown from 77 yards to Steve Smith in the first quarter.
Newton, Smith struck again in the second quarter, and ran third touchdown late in the third quarter. It was the Panthers' run to tie the game short on time, but hit a running back Mike Goodson (Notes) is a short walk and Linebacker Paris Lenon (Notes) Goodson stopped.
Perhaps the most impressive factor in terms of Newton's performance is that many of the shots that hindered him in Auburn, and through the combination of scouting and his pro day, there was a trick on Sunday. Outs was faster than the best adventure was great, and is much better that the timing of shots that are part of the dictionary of the NFL.
Cardinals are not the biggest challenge for the league to move the point of view of the defense, and the Battle of Newton as any rookie quarterback is not. Yet, his arm rocket, and the progressive movement of ridicule, Cam Newton appears to be a nightmare for opponents in a more coherent than most people expected.
